More people than ever have started questioning what our economy is for, what we value, and how we might organize it differently. But how do we build something we’ve never experienced—or even imagined possible? Through talks, workshops, and interactive experiences we hosted in a different kind of event to explore topics like local food economies, alternative currencies, and a new role for business and work. To not just start to figure out what a new economy could be, but what it would feel like.
After bending space-time, boarding, checking in, and receiving a personal time travel journal, we went on some field trips together. At the Job Office, the future was hiring. People were matched with new roles as civic journalists, low-tech engineers, re-purpose architects, mushroom farmers, urban gardeners, and librarians. Jobs that gave us a glimpse of what might matter in a new, very different economy.
At the Farmer's Hub people got to spend your travel credits in a one-hour food system with groceries from Tantolunden Food Forest, Ängsös micro dairy, and Nibble community farm (as well as the occational government program and emergency storage). People also - surprisingly fast and willingly - signed up to help out in the kitchen.
In Lost & Found we explored the trade-offs of a future with less stuff but more time for other things. People made lost item claims for luxury things, long-distance travel, and instant gratification, but found items like peace of mind, eye contact, better health, and time to read all the classics . They also accepted the permanent loss of things like screen time, endless electricity — and snow.
Even though the main part of the evening was spent on discussions, experiences, and interactions, we also got to listen to Jennifer Hinton, Lisa Lindström, Helena Norberg-Hodge and Dougald Hine who shared insights and perspectives on what a second act might be.We heard about the potential of a not-for-profit economy (don't miss Jen's new book, out soon). We leaned further forwards - and backwards - in time to a world where money is mostly for strangers and enemies (more from Dougald here). We learned about ancient futures and the economics of happiness that has already existed from Helena. And Lisa shared how being liberated from 'traditional' knowledge about business might just leave you free enough to creates pockets of a new system, even within this one.
